Standards versus Freedom of Expression: Detroit boy sues over hair cut

10/04/07

from here.

The mother of a 14-year-old high school student wants her son back at school after he was suspended for long hair that doesn't comply with the dress code.

Claudius Benson, a ninth grader at Old Redford Academy in southwest Detroit, hasn't had a haircut in 10 years because of his religious beliefs.

Follow up:

I sympathize with the boy. It's an odd religious belief, but I think it's sincere. On the other hand, can a school have standards or not? Inner city schools will not improve unless some people are inconvenienced. In other words, what they need is discipline and order.

The ACLU takes the side against order once again. Some critics think that the ACLU is anti-religion. That's not true, necessarily. They'll defend religious people as long as it's against the interests of the community. You might consider that a good thing, but it's bad news for anybody that wants to improve anything.
