CENTCOM news: Marines on Patrol in Rawah, Iraq
06/12/07
More alternative news from CENTCOM:

Lance Cpl. Steven R. Greene, a scout with Company D, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 2, uses his flashlight to peer into a dark corner while on a night patrol. The Marines say they patrol at night in order to maintain a constant presence throughout the city.
First LAR always on watch, even in enemy’s nightmares

By Cpl. Ryan C. Heiser
2nd Marine Division
RAWAH, Iraq -- There is an old saying, ‘All that is needed for evil to win, is for good men to stand by and do nothing.’ Marines like Lance Cpl. Marco N. Garces and Cpl. Diego A. Romero, like the rest of their battalion, refuse to stand by and do nothing.
Garces and Romero, scouts with Company D, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 2, were part of a patrol early on the morning of May 27, 2007, in the city of Rawah, Iraq, which overlooks the Euphrates River.
“Our patrols maintain our presence, especially at night,” said Garces, a native of Corpus Christie, Texas. “It lets the citizens know that we don’t slack off, and we are still out there doing our job, protecting them.”
A half moon shined down on the empty streets as the patrol made its way out of the company’s headquarters. Their footsteps echoed in the silence as each man used his flashlight to peer into dark corners and down empty alleyways.
“It would be so easy for the enemy to plant IEDs (improvised explosive devices) if we didn’t patrol at night. There would be a lot more mischief, and it would give the enemy a great chance to smuggle things into the city,” said Garces.
The Marines said the night patrols are essential to maintaining the city’s safety, and preventing injuries and even death.
“Night-time is the only time when we can’t visibly see the entire city, so it is important we make sure to eliminate any blind spots by sending out patrols to canvass the area, no matter what time it is,” said Romero, a native of San Antonio.
Romero said he would hate to see the devastation that would await the company if they didn’t send out patrols one evening.
“It would suck for whoever had the first patrol the next morning,” said Romero. “There would be casualties and a lot of dead Marines. Not just us either, the locals would get torn apart. The bad guys don’t care who they hurt, and the civilians rely on us to make sure stuff like that doesn’t happen.”
The duo said the patrols also have an affect on their brother Marines.
“It gives a peace of mind. We know we always have guys out there, so we are safe. As long as someone is always watching, there is a much lower chance of anyone getting hurt,” Romero said.
“I don’t know if anyone would sleep if we didn’t go out at night. Nobody can plant an ambush or an attack if you’re always there, always watching,” Garces said.
The patrols aren’t just the Marines’ responsibility; they also get the local Iraqi Police, or IPs, involved in the nocturnal activities.
“It’s a relief that we take the IPs with us,” said Garces. “It’s good for the locals to see their own guys watching out for them. It has to make them feel better to know that we aren’t the only ones keeping them safe, their own brothers and countrymen are looking after them too.”
The Marines said the night duty just comes natural, and they couldn’t imagine going any length of time without someone in the city, ‘watching their backs.’
“Evil never sleeps, the enemy never sleeps, why should we? I hope he does sleep though and dreams about us, standing outside his door, listening to him breathe. We are always out there, and he knows it. We’re even in his nightmares,” Romero said.

from some of the boys and they have also
received some packages that have been sent.
All is well.
From speaking to him, it appears that all marines who recently deployed out of twentynine palms, have arrived in Rawah and are safe!
Hope that eases some minds!
My fiance just got there and I was wondering what have you sent in your care packages to the boys in Rawah. I know it's a pretty advanced place compared to the rest of Iraq. Thanks so much in advance!
that they're working w/ IP on doing PR in
setting up schools, hospitals & community
centers, as well as providing military
protection. Anyone have any ideas what items would be useful to include w/ CARE pkgs.?
Thanks!
our next CARE pkg. My daughter's friend &
his unit have moved out of the COP & are now
living in the town of Rawah itself. As the
OIC of a PTT, he & his men are on 24-7. I'm sure your terrific ideas will be much
appreciated. Many thanks!

I enjoy reading the posts you all have left, and have even contacted a few of you. I noticed this seemed to be a gathering place for a lot of the recently deployed (Sept 07) 3rd LAR BN Marine families, so wanted to let you all know, as I found out from one of you, that there is a yahoo group for 3rd LAR BN. You might be interested in joining. I know they are planning to do surprises for the holidays for our boys, and could probably use the extra help. I have not heard from my Marine in two weeks but trust everything is ok. I keep them all in my prayers. Anyone who wants to feel free to email.
am Iraqi pepole and i live in rawah i think it is a good place and a safe place to live
Hi to all. My husband is on his second tour of iraq and is with 3rd LAR A. Co. I just found this website and it was very interesting to read everyones comments. They will soon be coming home! Less than 2 months! I cant believe it! Hope to see most of you in 29 for the HOMECOMING!!!
I just stumbled onto this string as I was looking for any information regarding Rawah. My son left March 18 heading to Rawah. He's with 2nd LAR out of Camp LeJeune. The hints about care packages are great! Blessings to you all with family in 3rd LAR. I hope Kevin's time is quiet and quick!
I was with the first Army unit that was permanent in Rawah. We spent 12 months there and really built up the COP. The area outside of Rawah was dangerous but Rawah itself wasn;t to bad. Anah was also a bad place until we put a COP there. I know the Marines that relieved us in Aug 06 lost 9 Marines in their first week there. The bottomline is always maintianing vigilance and not thinking you are better than the unit you are replacing. The most dangerous time in Iraq is your 1st month and last month.
My boyfriend left with 2nd LAR on the 18th as well for Rawah. I've heard they are going to be on the outskirts for a while and reading the last comment makes me sick to my stomach. If anyone has heard any news or knows anything more about what is going on, please share! My thoughts and prayers are with all the soldiers and their families!
Hey all,I am in the same boat as Marie, my boyfriend left on the 18th of march to go to Rawah, and he too is in the 2nd LAR A Co. I want to thank everyone for the care package ideas, and just the information of how it is over in Iraq. I heard from my boyfriend today, and he does say all is well, and that they are going on a 10 day mission real soon. I pray for him and all the other soldiers out there, god bless.
Hello everyone,My son called me today and informed me that he will be headed for Rawah very soon. He is with Cherry Point very close to Camp LeJune. He does not know what to expect and neither do I. I am very worried about his safety just like all of you. Thanks for the heads up on city of Rawah. I don't even have an address for him yet. He wanted to wait until he got there to inform me. His birthday is next month so I hope to have it soon. Thanks so much for the info all of you gave me.
My prayers are with everyone and may God keep them all safe.
Hey all,For those who haven't heard, 2D LAR A co is leaving for Haditha, Iraq and then going in the field for a month or so. Thanks again Veronica for the update a while ago, it always helps to know you're not alone going through all of this. You're all in my prayers!
Hello everyone. My son has been in Anah since Oct07. It has been wonderful to be able to speak with him every 5-7 days or so when he calls. I suggest you all look into ordering a Spawar phone card on line(very cheap rates)and email or motomail the number to your Marine. Motomail.com has also been great for keeping in touch and sending photos. The Marines love getting any kind of mail. It's a really tough job, little sleep, but there are more dangerous places they could be in Iraq. Not that there is not reason for worry and lots of prayer. And let's please be especially careful about posting specific information that could put our troops even more in harm's way. You may also want to check out the forums on Marineparents.com for lots of helpful information on supporting our Marines and staying strong while we wait for them all to come home.
hey = )everyone, just want to wish you all the best. My boyfriend is out in Rawah, and i want to let everyone know that i can't wait to marry this great hero. Please girls keep in mind that your marines are fighting for us.DON'T PLAY ON THEM,BE HONEST TO THE FULLEST. love you all and keep them in your prayers.
Hello anyone out there from 2/2 FO. CO. out of Camp LeJeune...my son has deployed to Rawah. Can anyone PLEASE give me any information or incouragement on the situation. I have no info. Anyone else on here from Fox CO. ? I would love to hear from you.Desperate mom of a hero
My son is in the 2/2 weapons co & left Camp Lejeune today. A current posting of the conditions in Rawah would be appreciated.Proud dad of a U.S. Marine
Hello Phil...Your son must be with the rest of the group that left . Now they are all gone. My son left with his group 2/2 FOX CO. 2 days ago. If there is any info out there, it would be greatly appreciated. I think MOTOMAIL will be up and working by begining of May:) I have not gotten a call yet, but still hopefull.
Very proud mom of a Marine
my brother also left a few days ago and said it would be awhile before they got to base so we'll just have to wait for any info
Hello,Well, I wish we could hear news soon. I miss my son already. If anyone has any info on the area now, I would appreciate it.
Proud mom of a Marine
Renee: I hope you have been able to get some word from your son but if not, don't be too concerned. It takes at least several days before your son will arrive in country and at his assigned base. And even then he may move from larger camp to smaller outpost. Once settled maybe he'll have an established way of staying in touch with you. Keep sending those motomails - once your son's unit is in the system he will start to receive those pretty regularly. My son called last night will a little brief news from Rawah and said "It's not bad." So, pray and try not to imagine too much of the worst. (Easier said than done, I know.)
Also, check out your son's unit for other family talking at marineparents.com.
Hello Eileen...Than-you so much for writing. I am on the marineparents.com, everyday! lol. And to everyone else on here...I got my call this evening...FINALLY. It was short, but I heard his voice. As for the Motomails, I sent one the day he left, so maybe there is one waiting for him. Thank-you so much for the info, Is your son there now? Well, take care now,
Will be praying for eveyone on here and the forum and ALL of our troops.
Renee
My husband is also with 2/2 Fox Co. I heard fromhim today. He said that not everyone was to their
destinations yet. That it would still be a few
days. He said that things were ok so far. I hope
so but I know he hates for me to worry. Motomail
is up I sent one this morning. Keep me posted
please if you here anything about the area and I
will do the same. God bless
Our son-in-law is headed to Rawah. He left with the 2/2 Weapons Co. out of NC on 4/23. He called our daughter to say they were in Iraq, but not yet to Rawah. Sandstorms were preventing their travel. Very hot!Keeping him and all his company in our prayers. It sound like it is a bit safer place for them to be. I trust in the Lord to keep a watchful eye over them all! They make us proud!
Just wondering if anyone has heard anything from our guys over in Rawah??Proud mom

My son was deployed to Rawah, Iraq on 4/23/08 with the 2/2 Fox Co out of Camp LeJeune. I have gotten several e-mails and one call. I also received some pictures yesterday. He said that he is finally getting adjusted to the time difference. He seems to be doing okay.Does anyone have a Marine from the Tampa area?
Marine Mom
Sara and Meg... Where are these calls and emails coming from? A base I take it. They must be rotated to a base pretty regular. I wish so much for that call. Did either one of you set up the Sparwar phone cards for your sons? I am trying to figure out what to do.Thanks

I did set up a Spawar account for my husband. But I am not sure that is going to help you as he will need the pin number. I wish that I could help you in some way.
My son is also in 2/2 Weapons Company and left Camp Lejeune deploying to Rawah on 04/23/08. Have had limited contact with him. I have received one call from Kuwait, one from Al Asad, and another call from Rawah. He left a message that he had arrived safely in Rawah, but I didn't get to speak to him. I have sent several emails to him and the last reply was on Friday 05/02/08. He says that things are ok. I sent a motomail on Tuesday 04/29/08 but I don't know if it has been delivered yet. If anyone has any information about the area, please keep me posted and I'll do the same. Has anyone heard of an incorrect address being given out for this unit?God bless each and every one of our Marines

Renee,I assume that the unit is at a base facility that has internet access. My son took his laptop with him so he communicates via e-mail regularly. I will ask my son if he knows your son and if so ask him to call you. My daughter-in-law bought an international calling card and just provided the information on the back of the card and he was able to make calls. I have heard "Spawar" card but do not know mcuh about them.
I will e-mail my son tonight and try to make a connection for you.
Sara
Our son in 2/2 Echo. We are in Land O Lakes Fla. Last heard from him on Friday about to leave for final station. He has a laptop and int'l phone card so just waiting to hear from him.
Renee,I heard from my son and he does not know your son. Sorry, I hope he calls soon!
Debbie,
How long has your son been in the service? My son has been in for just one year. He married just before he joined and he and his wife had a baby girl one week before he was deployed.
Sara
Hi, folks! Just a word about communication. My son left LeJeune mid-March, was at Rawah and now is at Haditha. Spawar cards worked at one location but not the other. Before you spend megabucks on phone cards, see if your guy is settled. He may be moved before he can get full usage out of the cards you buy. Also, because of the moving, my son has just now started receiving mail and packages. The package we sent him April 2 has not yet caught up with him. And to that, a word of warning: apparently some boxes are being stolen/broken into. Do NOT under any circumstances indicate if your box has electronic equipment in it. It may never reach your Marine! Misc. clothing or snacks or toiletries covers most of what you need to declare. And motomail works great if there's internet, but then so does email if there's internet. My first motomail to my son took over two weeks. No internet at the location where he's currently stationed.
Keep praying for them! They all appreciate hearing that folks back home are keeping them in their prayers! And remember to pray for your special Marine's buddies, too!
Love to all.
Hello everyone...WOW thank-you sooo much for all the support! First, Sarah. What Platoon is your son in? Chris is in 1st. Debbie....I heard laptops will only be good for playing games and watching movies, but not sure. Debbie... I hope you hear from your son, too. Anita...why should it take so long for mail and packages to reach the soldiers? the Military knows where they are. It shouldn't take that long! And yes, Keep praying ladies every chance you get!!We wll all get our calls hopefully soon....Fingers-crossed.

Hello all, so nice to see everyone communicating on here! My husband is currently in Rawah with WPNS...I actually talk to him often and email too. If you have questions I'd be happy to answer with as much as I know...we use SPAWAR and it's REALLY cheap. Their email has changed for the second time already....just stuff like that that I'd be happy to help with!Take care and Semper Fi!
Hello all.... I have finally heard from my son a few days ago. He is doing well. He can't say much, but wants more boxes shipped! lol. Only got to talk for a few minutes, but it was heaven!!Renee

I am so glad to hear that you were finally able to speak with your son. Calls from my husband are not as often anymore but they are there to do a job. I wish there were more people in the Marine Corps in our area it would make this a little easier.
Meg, I belong to a great support group in my area that has been around for a long time. You should see if there is one around you. It has helped so much for me, knowing there are parents like me with the same fears and feelings. We send boxes together, go to meetings twice a month, do parades, fund raisers,parties...all kinds of stuff for the cause. On another note: has anyone heard of anything that the guys need? we are shipping boxes, boxes, boxes!!!! haha.

My husband is also in 2/2 Fox Co. I have heard from h him a few times recently over the phone and a couple of emails. All were very short.
Renee -- You asked why mail and boxes would take so long, that the military knows where they are? You're right; they do. And if they're not convenient to a base, they don't get the boxes! After being at 3 different bases and three weeks in the desert (in 2.5 months' time) my son is finally at Korean Village. The box I mailed April 1 and the two mailed May 1 JUST got to him this past week (1st week in June). His company has been separated from the rest of his platoon, not staying at a hard base for any length of time and just moving too much for boxes to catch up. And we discovered by trial and error that MotoMail doesn't get to them any faster than U.S. mail if they're in the desert. So, delivery of ANYTHING becomes subject to where they are physically. Frustrating, but true. So the moral of the story: be patient. And if your Marine is moving around, it will take extra time for mail or packages to get to him, but they will get there!
Anita...Thanks. I figured that boxes would have to travel around and find our Marines!! HaHa. I have been sending 1-2 boxes a week! :0)
My parents have been sending that many too, so he should feel a little of home I hope. I have heard from him once and we only talked for a couple of minutes, but it was like heaven! :)

Hello out there!!I am still sending one or two boxes to my son every week. I have heard from him a few times by sat. phone. He has also emailed me a couple of times. Very short. At least I know he is ok. He has asked for different things and we are sending them as he is asking for them! I miss him so.
