Daily Kos watch SusanG talks about Motherhood.

A very nice article about sacrificing for one's family and comparing her family life to her political experience. A political group (or a sports team or the military or whatever) can be like a family so the metaphor works to emphasize a sort of cohesion within a political movement. I would argue, however, that progressive policies don't encourage family cohesion. In fact, the exact opposite is true. The incentive of many progressive policies is to transfer responsibility for the care of the family to the government. it used to be much more common for families to take care of their parents in old age, for example. Child care, welfare, sex education, no-fault divorce and a host of other reforms, whether you agree of disagree with them, have the effect of fostering government instead of family dependence.
It's nice that progressives laud the family, however. It should be a point where the vast majority of people can find common ground.
