Asymmetric view of Craig and bathroom peerage
08/29/07
It seems as though Larry Craig did what he was accused of doing, which is a little disgusting and, worse than consesual homosexual sex, illegal.
Asymmetric points:
1. The fact that not all who support a standard can conform to its dictates doesn't mean the standard shouldn't exist. I'm sure Democratic Senators drive gas-guzzling cars.
2. Nobody has ever claimed that everybody in a certain party is free of corruption or temptation. That's one out of 49 Rep. Senators and Haggard was one of how many prachers?
3. Almost as seemly is the delight with which political opponents view a man's destruction.
Follow up:
4. What do they make of the majority of senators who abide by their philosophy? Romney? Do they give him credibility or will he be judged by the actions of his group. What do we call that?
5. Your actions are what you are, not your ideas. At some point in behavior, you cease to be a good person.
7. Likewise, like with the priest scandal in the Catholic Church, an institution's integrity needs to be called into question after a certain level of behavior. At least if their behavior is worse than the general public.
8. Mitt Romney is correct that whenever possible, we should elect people whom they can use as examples for their children.
8. The reaction of Republicans with standards is certainly more harsh than the reaction of Democrats sans standards in sexual behavior (I assume rape and child molestation would elicit a strong Democratic reaction, to be fair. But, then there's the Clinton-Willey thing)

I don't really like the witch hunt element of this case. For the most part he was an excellent politician for three decades whose record and achievements will be erased or obscured by his indiscretion.
If Craig is gay, then it sad that he had to lead a double life and find lust or sex anonymously in public places. But the greater shame would be that he opposed gay marriage and had a strong record against gay rights. That's just hypocritical and self-loathing.
