Has politics ever been more boring than in December, 2007?
12/17/07

Despite the close race for the presidential nomination in both parties, I'm finding anything having to do with the election extremely boring. In fact, this December, politics in general is putting me to sleep.
Why?
1. All of the Republicans except for one or two would make fine presidents, yet none of them really inspire me, and the prospect of a Hillary presidency doesn't scare me as much as I thought it would.
2. The motivating issue over the past five years, Iraq, seems settled -we'll stay for a while and then leave a small force behind in a better Iraq.
3. Democrats may be less aggressive (or, maybe not), but I have to believe that they'll defend the country against terrorists.
4. Health care may change slightly depending on the party, but as demonstrated by the loud "thud" you heard when the SCHIP tree fell in the federal forest, people say they want something like universal care but realize that any more government involvement will mean less, lower quality, and more expensive health care than they presently get with their HMO. Are Americans willing to take that gamble?
5. Crime? Is anybody arguing for less strict enforcement?
6. Welfare? Check.
7. Taxes? We'll neither "put the IRS out of business" nor increase taxes- much.
8. Even immigration has cooled off. There'll be no licenses, amnesty, or deportations.
9. The abortion situation will remain as it is now for the foreseeable future.
The above common sense consensi are why Republicans are talking about Mormon theology, and Democrats are mumbling something about "change" and "hope." We don't live in interesting times. Thanks God.
