John McCain's prisoner of war story

02/04/08

From wikipedia

I got this from Wikipedia:

On October 26, 1967, McCain was flying as part of a 20-plane attack against a thermal power plant in central Hanoi, a heavily defended target area that had previously been off-limits to U.S. raids. McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by a Soviet-made SA-2 anti-aircraft missile while pulling up after dropping its bombs. McCain fractured both arms and a leg in being hit and ejecting from his plane. He nearly drowned after he parachuted into Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi. After he regained consciousness, a mob gathered around him, spat on him, kicked him and stripped him of his clothing. Others crushed his shoulder with the butt of a rifle and bayoneted him in his left foot and abdominal area; he was then transported to Hanoi's main prison. Although McCain was badly wounded, his captors refused to put him in the hospital, deciding he would soon die anyway. They beat and interrogated him, but McCain only offered his name, rank, serial number, and date of birth. Only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a top admiral did they give him medical care and announce his capture. At this point, two days after McCain's plane went down, that event and his status as a POW made the front page of The New York Times.

Follow up:

McCain spent six weeks in a hospital, receiving marginal care, was interviewed by a French television reporter whose report was carried on CBS, and was observed by a variety of North Vietnamese, including the famous General Vo Nguyen Giap. Many of the North Vietnamese observers assumed that he must be part of America's political-military-economic elite. Now having lost 50 pounds, in a chest cast, and with his hair turned white, McCain was sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Hanoi in December 1967, into a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live a week (one was Bud Day, a future Medal of Honor recipient); they nursed McCain and kept him alive. In March 1968, McCain was put into solitary confinement, where he would be for two years. In July 1968, McCain's father was named Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command (CINCPAC), stationed in Honolulu and commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater. McCain was immediately offered a chance to return home early: the North Vietnamese wanted a mercy-showing propaganda coup for the outside world, and a message that only privilege mattered that they could use against the other POWs. McCain turned down the offer of repatriation due to the Code of Conduct of "first in, first out": he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well. McCain's refusal to be released was even remarked upon by North Vietnamese officials to U.S. envoy Averell Harriman at the ongoing Paris Peace Talks.

In August 1968, a program of vigorous torture methods began on McCain, using rope bindings into painful positions and beatings every two hours, at the same time as he was suffering from dysentery. Teeth and bones were broken again as was McCain's spirit; the beginnings of a suicide attempt was stopped by guards. After four days of this, McCain signed an anti-American propaganda "confession" that said he was a "black criminal" and an "air pirate", although he used stilted Communist jargon and ungrammatical language to signal the statement was forced. He would later write, "I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine." His injuries to this day have left him incapable of raising his arms above his head. His captors tried to force him to sign a second statement, and this time he refused. He received two to three beatings per week because of his continued refusal. Other American POWs were similarly tortured and maltreated in order to extract "confessions". On one occasion when McCain was physically coerced to give the names of members of his squadron, he supplied them the names of the Green Bay Packers' offensive line. On another occasion, a guard surreptitiously loosened McCain's painful rope bindings for a night; when he later saw McCain on Christmas Day, he stood next to McCain and silently drew a cross in the dirt with his foot (decades later, McCain would relate this Good Samaritan story during his presidential campaigns, as a testament to faith and humanity). McCain refused to meet with various anti-war peace groups coming to Hanoi, such as those led by David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, and Rennie Davis, not wanting to give either them or the North Vietnamese a propaganda victory based on his connection to his father.

In October 1969, treatment of McCain and the other POWs suddenly improved, after a badly beaten and weakened POW who had been released that summer disclosed to the world press the conditions to which they were being subjected. In December 1969, McCain was transferred to Hoa Loa Prison, which later became famous via its POW nickname of the "Hanoi Hilton". McCain continued to refuse to see anti-war groups or journalists sympathetic to the North Vietnamese regime; to one visitor who did speak with him, McCain later wrote, "I told him I had no remorse about what I did, and that I would do it over again if the same opportunity presented itself." McCain and other prisoners were moved around to different camps at times, but conditions over the next several years were generally more tolerable than they had been before.

Altogether McCain was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five and a half years. The Paris Peace Accords were signed on January 27, 1973, ending direct U.S. involvement in the war, but the Operation Homecoming arrangements for POWs took longer; McCain was finally released from captivity on March 15, 1973, having been a POW for almost an extra five years due to his refusal to accept the out-of-sequence repatriation offer.

Give the man a medal. Not the GOP nomination.

Sad story, and one that should never be repeated, but there is nothing here that tells me is has extraordinary intelligence enough to run the country. If he took care of the US as he took care of himself in Vietnam we'd all be POWs to Al Qaeda.

Just because he put his fellow POWs before
himself doesnt mean that we would all be POWs to
AL Qaeda. Just because he has good morals and isnt a coward like you obivously are. Personally that comment was stupid and i think you should think before you speak or think at all.

You say he dosent have what it takes to run a country, and you think a woman does. What back ground does she have haa! NONE.. What John McCain did was brave. He stood his ground he did what was right and didnt back down. He knows war hes ben there done that, we need a strong president. Thats what hes GOING to be. I cant believe some people would rather a muslim become a Commander and Chief who has no experience in war and who has stepped on everyones back to get were he is now. If Obama becomes president we are in a world of trouble. The people who represent Obama are racist and thats what he stands for. McCain ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

In response to Henry Gomez,
They did give him a medal. Well, medals:

Silver Star
Legion of Merit
Distinguished Flying Cross
Bronze Star
Purple Heart
Prisoner of War Medal

He received the nomination for having 26 years in Congress.
Oh by the way, that's 23 more years than Barack Hussein Obama, and 18 more years than Ms. Clinton.

Age is a badge of wisdom and experience. He has PROVEN himself with his service to our country and his moral/ethical thinking.
Hil and Obam are like inexperienced teens that talk a good game.....but I ask you...would you rather ask your father for wise advise or your teenager?!
Respectfully,
Kathy

How could any well-thinking American that truly loves this country read this article and have any question as to who to vote for as President? John McCain's history and proven experience is filled with public service, the American spirit and love of his country. Hillery Clinton's past is filled with scandal and an array of suspicious deaths during the imfamous whitewater years. Barak Hussein Obama's history is filled with raciest pastors, revolutionaries that bomb police stations and kill the innocent, scandalist land deals and a wife that isn't proud to be an American, yet as a black woman makes $375,000 a year in "raciest America". Both Barak and "the Hil" are poverty pimps and race pedlers. McCain has proven himself a great American time and time again. Barak and "the Hil" haven't earned my respect enough to mention them in the same sentence as John McCain. If you think so then you must listen to Hollywood Stars to tell you who to vote for. Wake up America!

I cannot believe anybody who knows anything about the facts on both candidates could even remotely consider a vote for the democratic candidate. He has contributed nothing to this country but discourse and the republican candidate has given his all. I do not agree with everything he has said so far, but I am much more likely to listen to him than to the towel head on the other side.

Unless the North Vietnamese were conducting, upper division, International relation, seminars, in solitary confinement where McCain was held for two years it's difficult to see how any reasonable person would equate prisoner of war experience with foreign policy experience. John McCain is certainly a hero and a patriot but that does not make him presidential material. Sorry

Wow! Most you liberals are really sick. I have many disagreements in position with McCain. But his integrity, character & guts are unquestionable. Not one of you could take what he was given in North Vietnam without singing like a jaybird & chanting praises of Ho Chi Minh. I don't even know if I could have said no to an offer of early release. Most of you cannot go a morning without your double latte' let alone 2 years in solitary. Whether or not you like him, support him or think he would make a good President, he deserves as much respect as anyone could muster. He certainly has the quality of character to be President and I do not know whether or not there is any factual evidence that Obama does. Debate the other qualities a leader needs if you choose, but McCain has character & courage.

Senator John McCain has my vote. I agree with Dr. Ruger in that none of you liberal idiots could even go a day without all of your luxuries. McCain was a PRISONER OF WAR for five and a half years, people! That's food for thought. He exhibited extraordinary solidarity while being held captive, tortured, and spat on by the North Vietnamese. Osama (oh wait, did I actually say that?) continually says things that appeal to the common masses, but also continually does the exact OPPOSITE of that. He's too inexperienced and Hillary is a ball-buster, both of which have no chance at snagging the keys for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Here's to you, President McCain! Cheers!

Look, I'm not questioning the man's integrity. I've felt strongly about McCain's character since he announced that he would keep us in Iraq "for as long as it takes" despite the public outcry that we start a pullout. He's a hero, I agree completely and if not for this damn war I would be hard-pressed to vote against him. However, there are key issues which both candidates differ on. I, personally, believe that we need to get out of Iraq. Despite the word of their leaders, the Iraqi people want us out. People back home, here in the US want to see our troops come home. The economy is falling APART, not "slowing" as Mccain put it. We lack the resources to deal with Afghanistan anymore, and the new handgun law is going to make it even easier criminals here in the US to own a firearm. MCCain is a great man, but his political viewpoints are different from my own. I have NO CHOICE but to vote for Obama.

I believe our country needs someone that will know how to handle a situation with the best interest of the country at heart. We need someone who will ask for the opinion of the nation. I have been in the military for 7 years and have fought in iraq and in panama. I know what it is like to have bullets fly by your head and see dead bodies. I also work and live in the united states and I believe the country needs to stop all the nonsense of all theaccusing who did what. Mc cain is older and wise but that does not make a great president. People have made up their minds on race and discrimination. Give the candidate a chance by what he wants for the country and your children. Not for his skin color or his name. These are factors that should make your decision on the president of the united states. if this is your way of making decisions than you should not vote.I am sure all of you want to be judged based on who you are not what you look like or what your name is. believe this and God will help you find the answer.

I wonder about two things in the story of John McCain not accepting an early release from captivity offered by the North Vietnamese. First, if his captors wanted to release him why didn't they just leave him at the gate of a foreign embassy and have it send McCain on to the United States? Here, in the U.S. if the government wants to release a prisoner from a penitentiary he can't refuse. He is placed on a bus and dropped off at the nearest town.
But accepting that McCain had that choice was anyone else released because he refused to go? And did he consider how helpful his knowledge gained as a POW would be when he was being debriefed? Maybe many other POWs would have been repatriated because of the knowledge he could furnish.
POWs are supposed to escape when possible. It is wierd to me to think a POW would refuse to take advantage of an escape route because it was too easy.
Joh McCain's experience is evidence that he lacked good judgment then and may still lack it. He did not think the matter through in 1968; why would we think he would be any different today?

You are a sad example of an American and obviously NEVER HAD THE GUTS TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY!! Or else you would realize that WE are the ONLY ones who treat POWS with respect. Hell, in OIF 1... oh sorry, you have no idea what that is, Operation Iraqi Freedom, the first year... Iraqi POWS (detainees now, to be politically correct) were treated a hell of a lot better than the Coalition Forces were. Coalition Forces are your US troops and other Allies (in case you didn't know) How do I know? Because I was there. What were you doing at that time? Chilling at a coffee shop complaining about worthless crap? John McCain refused to be released because he knew how that would affect the other POWs that would be left behind, he knew that his fellow men would be constantly beaten and mistreated and didn't want to have that on his conscience for the rest of his life. He wanted to fight his own battles without having his father fight for him. He stayed for the code "No man left behind". Can you even begin to understand the meaning behind that? Or are you that much of a selfish coward that you would leave your fellow man to rot just so you can have some comfort? He told them that he would go if the men that were there before him were to be set free as well, the vietnamese refused so he stayed! That's one HELL OF A MAN!!!! Trust me, if there was no validity in McCain's POW story, it would've been shown on every television station in the world and Obama and Hillary would've used that as fuel for thier campaigns. Read the bio again there buddy before you waste internet space with your ignorance. I am proud to have served my country, but even PROUDER to know that men, like McCain, still exist and willing to stand up for this country instead of down talking it. What lies and scandals have you heard about McCain that were true? Now ask yourself the same question about the other 2. And you want to talk about the lack of good judgement! One thing is for sure, you would've sang like a canary if it was you who was a POW in Vietnam! My question to you... Are you related to Jane Fonda?

I used to be happy when arguments like yours were made against my client in a court. If my opponent had a weak case I would be accused of being dishonest and dumb. I would win my case. When the argument was polite was when I got nervous.
By the way, I was in coffee shops in the U.S. during the Vietnam war. My war was in Korea where I was on the ground in the army in 1951-52--which were also years of warfare.

his character and modivation to do what is right is what this country needs as a presi

for what is right and it may not always be what you want to here. that is a leader.

Wow, the language I hear being thrown around now a days. It's like I can't go a day without hearing someone's argument against Obama being flowered with juvenile name calling. Please, please get out of the army, go back to high school and receive some education. Then come back and state your case like an adult, without using slang names like "the Hil" and "Towelhead."

Wake up America? America isn't asleep, they're just ignoring your stupidity.

Comment from: Lina [Visitor]
I agree, it does take "one hell of a man" to face down all that torture, it required guts, it required strength, but being one hell of a man is NOT ALL IT TAKES TO BECOME PRESIDENT! Do his actions prove that he is wise? no. Was that the smart thing to do? no, and I'm not saying that because he needed comfort, what good can he do for his fellow POWs if he's stuck in there with them? Suffer with them? Wow that's helpful. What I'm trying to say is, that sort of strength makes a good man, but not necessarily a good president.

Where does all this "moral man" stuff come from? He returned to a wife who was seriously injured, admitted he committed adultery multiple times, left her and his kids because he'd found someone richer and (now) prettier and younger...an "heiress"...Moral? a hero? the kind of man I hope my sons turn out to be like? No way. And I agree with the questioner who asked about his tale that he "turned down" being released! Since when are prisoners asked "Do you want to be released?" Duh!

I think it's despicable for army Colonel Earl Hopper to be ratting out John McCain for helping the North Vietnamese to set up defensive positions for future air raids and escape routes of U.S. Navy bombers. There's an unwritten, but well understood, rule amongst soldiers that "what happens in POW camps stays in POW camps," and Hopper knows this rule very well. To bring up McCain's collaboration with the enemy 35 years ago and reveal that the Vietnamese nickname for him was "Songbird", now that he's running for the Presidency, is truly playing dirty tricks Obama style. People who have never been in such a situation think that everyone can be a Jack Bauer character like on the TV show 24 and withstand all sorts of torture. John didn't want to go through all this torture and, knowing he would eventually talk, simply avoided the torture and told them what they wanted to know before hand. He's not the only one, I can assure you, and I don't think that it should disqualify him from running for the Presidency.

this is a reply to John's comment.

Dude, Barack isnt Muslim. He is Christian.
Get your fucking facts straight. Ha, yea you support McCain, meaning you support Palin. So if McCain cant be president, then Palin is president. And by what you are saying, that is bad. Maybe you should think through everything first.

And just because people support Barack doesnt mean they are racist. If anyone is racist, its you. You dont think a african-american can govern this country, except you dont know that. You just say he cant because of what race he is and what color skin he has.

And just because McCain was A Pow, doesnt mean he can be president. Republicans who agree with Bush cant govern. They are gonna fuck this country up even more. And its already fucked up from the eight years of Bush.

i do not, and will not agree with EVERY policy that any candidate puts forth. The real question is: would you like to have a candidate that is wishy-washy, has hardly any experience,or would you rather have a President whom you KNOW has good morals, is ethical, and not only has experience but is consistent and strong-willed to make SURE that what he believes in will become policy?

It truly humbles me to think of what my own response would have been to the North Vietnamese if given the same opportunity Senator McCain was given. Who of us would have chosen to stay? It speaks to the unselfish integrity of this man. Anyone can lead in good times...but when the chips are down, and the shoe leather hits the sidewalk, speaking only for myself, I want this man in front.

I am a register Independent I cross party lines all the time. After reading about each candidate since the start of this race I know there is no other choice for me but McCain. What is so wonderful about being an American is we have the freedom to speak our minds without fear of tourture or death. That's what war heros like McCain have fought for and preserved for us, our freedom. If you agree with him or not do not put him down or our other war heros, they have more than earned our respect. Ask your self what have you done that can even compare to the sacrifices our war heros have made for us. The mean comments remind me of when the Vietnam vets came back and people such as these spit on our vets and called them baby killers. These were far left liberals. Read about the canidates make your decision but don't put down your brother or sister for their beliefs just because you don't agree. We all have to coexsist with each other no matter what you believe.

John McCain is a lying rat he did spill his guts in the prisoner of war camp, the only reason they did not kill him was because of his dads position. ahe left the Navy and went into politics because no one in the military would ever trust a lying turn coat ever again. He continues to lie even today in his run for the President, he is a lying Bush man even today you morons believe anything you read. The nickname songbird was given because he sang like a bird to save his own self, he told the Vietnamese his dad was an Admiral. The is still a lying good for nothing cheat today. I served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969, and I lived by the code of conduct, I know soldiers who died honoring the code of conduct and could not save their lives by telling the North Vietnamese that their father was a Admiral. Wake the fuck up because some of you non knowing, Non serving ass holes need to keep your moths shut before you dishonor my 58,000 fellow sodiers who lost their lives in Vietnam to protect cowards like john mccain
