Bill Buckley versus Gore Vidal
02/27/08
Sorry, but this is just too fun. Some points as you watch:
1. The more things change, the more things stay the same: The military-industrial complex. Always the opinion of Western Europe. Big versus small government.
2. The profound wrongness of Gore Vidal: Race riots and revolution- after 1968!
3. The propensity of leftists to call conservatives fascists (crypto or otherwise). Actually, Buckley fought against fascism in WWII. It reminds me yet again of the left's fundamental misunderstanding of the term as Goldberg points out in his book, Liberal Fascism. True to form, Buckley had the facts on his side, for although he wasn't a fascist, Vidal was a homosexual.
4. Notice Buckley's prescient 1999 comments on Bush.

Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning by Jonah Goldberg
Vidal calls Buckley a Crypto-Nazi.

I know you're not a fan of Ann Coulter but I thought this excerpt from her latest column for Human Events was appropriate:With liberal Republicans still bothering everyone even after Reagan, Buckley went all out against liberal Republican Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. When Democrat Joe Lieberman challenged Weicker for the Senate in 1988, National Review ran an article subtly titled: "Does Lowell Weicker Make You Sick?"
Buckley started a political action committee to support Lieberman, explaining, "We want to pass the word that it's OK to vote for the other guy or stay at home." The good thing about Lieberman, Buckley said, was that he "doesn't have the tendency of appalling you every time he opens his mouth."
Sums up how I feel about McCain
Clarification, I feel about McCain the way Buckley felt about about Weicker not Lieberman.
