Commentary on Barack Obama's racism speech in Philadelphia

03/18/08

Here for text.

It's easy to judge Obama's speeches, but it's hard to assess their impact. On the one hand, they're all about dressing up socialist wolves in moderate, practical clothing and the elevation of selfishness (free _____) to magnanimity. But, nobody would use disguises if they never worked.

The speech ambiguously condemns Wright while apologizing for him and making anybody who brings it up feel "divisive," the worst thing you can be in an Obama world-except when he himself is talking about corporations or "special interests."

It talks about his background which I find neither heroic nor interesting (I don't denigrate it, either- I just don't care more about his accomplishments than his circumstances.) and offers some middling America-loving talk, inaccurate history (No charitable interpretations there.), demonstrably wrong problem-sourcing (Not enough parks or police?), and his pretty face.

In the end, it's a speech about race which nobody(!) wants to think about. The vast majority of people outside of grammar and graduate schools have settled on a policy of benign neglect. They're not racists, but they won't be intimidated into wasting money or time. Most people feel that it's up to each community (each person, really) to improve its situation. Will people want to bother with four years of his macro-blame and middle class oblige. The first black president will probably be a conservative.

One moderate commentator on youtube disagrees with me, apparently:

When this speech, the greatest so far in this century, is taught in classrooms of the future, how do you think his opponents will be remembered? Thank you Barack for giving us the audacity of hope at this time of so many Bush-and-his-lockstep-Republican created crises!

Here's the only paragraph you need to see:

But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.

As such, Reverend Wright’s comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems – two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.

Divisive! Choosing between Jordan, Bird, or Magic is "divisive." Oh, well, Wright meant well.

Getting yourself pastored by a radical hater shows bad judgment. Lying about it when asked by the media shows dishonesty. Request for presidency denied.

Barack's speech was not enough for me. He needs to learn more about the Irish immigrants and indentured servants. Irish immigrants were considered less than slaves and ependable, as a result they were given tasks that were considered too dangerous for slaves.

TO LISA TYER,
I hate when people like you try to justify all the racial bs that goes on this country. Irish was probably mis-treated but Irish still didn't go through all the hell black people went through and still going through just in a different context. You also fail to record how much niggers the Irish hang and beat up (The movie Gang of New York failed to put that on the big screen) So stop trying to justify the hate that goes on this country. Remember blacks been in this country way before the Irish and it wasn't by choice you ass.

Another thing Mrs/Ms Lisa Tyler,
Irish people are still white, you act like Irish people was all over the country in the beginning. Most Irish lived in the northeast. So for you to blah blah about how Irish people was treated compare the slaves(blacks) remember that word Slaves. Irish people came to this country by choice and they didn't discriminated because of there race.

I got news for everyone. In the entire history of the human race there has never been a better time or place to be black than in the U.S. in 2008. I mean seriously. That doesn't mean there is equality or that there isn't prejudice but objectively speaking name me a country or a time where blacks have/had more opportunity.

Doncarlo, people would be inclined to take your comments more seriously if they were in proper English. Also, racism has never been and will never be defined solely by skin color as you seem to wish to define it. It is defined by ethnicity national heritage. So improper treatment of Irish immigrants by American citizens is just as much racism as anything else.

Henry, well said.

Sometimes, no matter how good it is, people see through one's disguise.

The real Obama is not motivating. He's a racist. So is that Reverend Wright.

Obama's speech about racism was a half-ass attempt to gloss over the contempt blacks have for America and for White people. He said his mentor was sincere and that blacks' feelings were based on real anger. What a load of crap. Besides, that does not give a pastor the right to disrespect this country like he did. Obama said nobody's perfect, pastors are people too... Let me tell you, pastors - and Presidential candidates - need to be held to higher standards than this.

Real anger about racism and discrimination? I fell it. I feel it every time I read about young black men with pistols shooting white college girls just to steal their damn car.

Right... i do agree that what wright said was wrong. But the important part of the speech that we should pay attention to is why he believes such things, why we all believe those things when people of other races are around. Wright is not alone in the way he thinks, and Don Imus is not alone in the way he thinks. I like the speech because Obama is addressing the forest, not the trees.

The intent of this speech was not prompted by Obama's desire to vocalize an issue that has long needed further consideration and civil debate, but was prompted by his relationship with Rev. Wright. This zealous oration is only used to as way to conceal his direct rebuttle and his intent to validate his relationship with Rev. Wright. Yes, I am open to respecting Obama and will continue to research and contemplate the potentials of each candidate, but I will see him with much more caution from now on because of this relationship. Rev. Wright preaches hatred and immaturity that the true black heroes of our history would be ashamed to associate themselves with.

Lyn,
Not to justify the murder of a white woman in Alabama a few weeks ago. However, you must not know about all the thousands of black men that were castrated and burned to a crisp for no reason at all. You have a very one sided view of this that unfortunately will not change any time soon but I have news for you. You and all the other haters of black, brown and red people on this planet (we are actually the MAJORITY), need to understand that GOD is about to restore BLACK people to greatness. Our people started civilization in Africa (yes we are descendants of Eygptians) and because of us everyone was elevated in terms of culture and intelligence. The person that says that there is no better time and place to be black than in America was right. Lyn, no matter how hard you try, you are not in control. GOD is and it is our turn to rule. You do and say what you want to..white rule is over:o)

Race cannot be defined in terms of national heritage. Irish is not a race, neither is Nigerian, Moroccan, British, ect. These are simply boundaries we humans drew up to divide huge masses of land. That being said, the treatment of Irish immigrants cannot be classified as racist. That is not to say it was any less abominable than the treatment of blacks in this country, but it has proved to be much easier for the entire nation to overcome because the hatred was not rooted in so deep a percieved difference as black and white. Regardless, to say the Irish face as difficult a challenge as blacks in America in 2008 is just plain ignorant. Obama may very well be covering up his own racist tracks with this speech, but his message of unity and his call for a political paradigm shift are points that should not be overlooked, despite what we all feel his personal motives may be.

His delivery of the speech was eloquent. The speech itself was a joke, comparing a racist, America hating scumbag to his grandmother....come on. People wake up !! Obama Hussein will never be the right person for the job of President. He should be removed from office altogether, and sent packing to some other country with his "pastor" to live out the remainder of their US hating, racist lives.

John, Why does the name Hussein mean so much to you? It is just a name. Don't you think it's time that we all focused on what is important? Consider the possibility that this man is real. If he is, is it right to ignore that more than anything what the world really needs now is to move in a different direction. Or would you rather things just stay the way they are?

By the way, John. You sound about as rascist as they come...Go to the mirror and look at yourself.

As a white South African who has enjoyed the pleasure of a Nelson Mandela presidency, it is shocking to see the stereotyped racial hang-ups that some white Americans display on this blog.

sometimes i think america is turning out to be the most backward society ever, for all its advancement. for country that has led the world in so many things, its people judge leaders not by what the can do but ny volor, family ties etc. what is wrong with you people? you have a country with a leadership that is tearing the world apart witht he speed of the space rocket, a country that support bad leaders because of national interest and leave the problems with the peoples who those leaders lead when things become bad. look critically at american history. in the south america, africa mid east and asia. and even some places in europe. the've distroyed anything they touch. and you guys are not looking deep at the leaders you choose, instead you are fighting over what a pastor said and what obama said. look at the man's work in the US Senate. i finished reading his history on wikipedia. i watched his innovation speech at google and a host of his speeches. the man's not that bad. look at him not as a black man but as an american who wants the good of the country. he is not promising big tax cuts for the rich is he? he is not promising a reckeless war is he? afterall he is not even a full black man. he is half black, half white. that notion of a blackman has reasons why its been amplified. he didn't even grow up with his dad, the black man. he grew up with his mum the white woman. please people, choose wise leaders for your country. stop judging people on the basis of names, religion and race, else yours will be the shortest empire ever to have been created. read history properly. stop the petiness and look at the big picture. america is the land that created google for god sakes. chill

Barack's speech was eloquent, without a doubt. Americans have a right to be concerned about Obama's connection to Reverend Wright, as much as they need to be concerned about any candidate. It's important to understand the "legacy of discrimination," which Obama referred to in his speech - if you take a close look, you will see that discrimination against African Americans was unlike any other form of racism that occured in this country.

I agree that the first black American president may be conservative, but I disagree that this is a reason we should not vote for Obama - because he is equivocating about his future actions in office. No, I believe that he is sincere.

After reading the transcript, his speech is powerful, not because he is a powerful speaker, but because he addresses the issue without resorting to explanations for the negativity that imply action - no, he does expain, but more historically than anything.

Speaking of tax cuts: (responding to dave)

If you look historically at tax cuts, we see from looking at the social security tax increases in the past four decades, the largest increases were during republican presidencies (in particular from 82-83 during Reagan's presidency); Republicans cut taxes, yet how many people ask where they get the additioanl revenue from? Please, take a look at what happened in the last few days with the fifth largest investment bank (as one example of how the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury and other institutions are being manipulated to counter a faltering economy because somebody in the White House decided it was easier to scapegoat.)

I think we need people who care for the country as much as their image.

I don't know if Obama is that person. I, however, can understand why he tried to talk about Rev. Wright in a non-dismissive manner. He said unequivocally that Wright was wrong. To those who claim he was ambiguous - he was not. Please, look at the transcript.

Perhaps, you are uncomfortable with where he left off from the blame and decided to talk about underlying issues.

I am a junior at a public high school and have had to watch this speech in both my History and English class. And in both classes my teachers have started discussions about how great a speech this is and how great Obama is and one of the teachers is even making us write a paper on this. Honestly, I'm a bit annoyed that teachers are allowed to get away with this kind of biased teaching. I'll admit Obama is a good public speaker, but I think this unfair.

People, check what the teachers are doing to YOUR KIDS!

It's criminal!

Is it possible for “ethnocentrics/ethnophobics” to go beyond the tectonic plates of “reified/essentialised” identity(”race”, ethnicity, gender, nation, clan, family, caste, class, tribe, religion, ideology, occupation, culture. etc) politics to generate an adequate/appropriate united response to promote universal liberty, peace, justice and security on Planet Earth???

What is the DIFFERENCE between “RACISM”, “FASCISM” & “COMMUNISM/SOCIALISM/LIBERALISM” and HOW ARE THESE “ISMS” RELATED????

There seems to be amazing optimism for President elect Barak Hussein Obama who has earned the supreme status and respect in the NWO by exercising absolute ideological authority over some confused so-called “RACISTS”, “COMMUNISTS/LIBERALS/SOCIALISTS” & “FASCISTS”/“NEO-FASCISTS” who “DANCE” to his tunes.

Yes! I am guilty for rejecting the diverse colours of the feathers attached to chickens before I cook and violently chew/eat the MEAT. - It gives me peace of mind.
