Insincere gay marriage argument by Jonathan Rauch

06/22/08

Jonathan Rauch thinks marriage is great for America. Apparently, this thought occurred to him as gay marriage because an issue because I can't find him saying as much before.

What Rauch forgets to say is that gay marriage either leads to less marriage or is the result of marriage's lessening prestige because countries that have adopted gay marriage have seen marriage rates decline (here and here).

And all marriages don't help society. A male-female marriage is beneficial because men protect women, women are free to raise children, and, most importantly, men and women are forced to get along- multisexualism in action.

How does Joe and Tom having a marriage license help anybody? Children? Any child wouldn't be "theirs" exclusively. The potential custody/visitation/paternity issues boggle the mind. Is the potential confusion "good" for children? How many gay couples would have exclusive custody of children? Do we really want to encourage gay couples to "have" children?

Does it help gay people? Why would entering an institution devoid of any meaning help anybody?

How do I know it wouldn't have any meaning? Because the people who support gay marriage aren't the people who revere marriage, the ones who tsk tsk their friends for staying single. They're the ones likely to say that marriage is just a piece of paper.

In this, they're like liberals who say that more welfare spending would decrease abortion (or the other way around). They don't care about abortion- they just want to increase spending.
