Drilling for oil will help alternative energy development

Couldn't some of the tax money from oil development and a better performing economy be used for alternative energy research? Today, a great deal of that money is being sent to foreign nations.
What if we don't find a viable automobile fuel alternative for 10 years? Wouldn't lower oil prices ease the transition?
