Jena, Louisiana 6, racism, and fuzzy thinking
09/20/07
Since it's about race, it must be stupid. Since it's stupid, I'll be brief and bullet-point it.
1. It's a very bad thing to put nooses on trees to intimidate or denigrate fellow citizens.
2. Is putting nooses on trees while you're a student in school free speech? No. It's the school's prerogative to ensure order in a school. When I'm an administrator, I'd try to suspend the kids.
Follow up:
3. Is it correct to beat up people who offend you? Sometimes, yes, in an old-school, honor sort of way, but it should be avoided and the assaulter should be justly punished lest it become the first recourse to offense in society.
4. What point are the protesters trying to make? That it's appropriate to beat people up that offend you or even people that don't as in the Jena case (Justin Barker didn't place the nooses on the tree)? Let's agree not to offend and not to answer offense with physical violence.
5. Where's the ACLU? What if a kid goes to school with an anti-Christian, anti-Bush, anti-military t-shirt? Should they be beat up as well?
6. If the protesters just want a proportional punishment, I can buy that. Certainly, we can come to some agreement.
7. That Democrats decided to detour through Jena on their pandering tour (see Spanish Democrat debate recap here) is typically pathetic.

Now I know there is racism involved but I was astounded watching the CNN "Jena 6" special report last night where quietly tucked into the report at the very end, the US Attorney said this was the 16 year old Black kid's "4th Battery" charge. I do beleive there is unequal justice in "La Salle Parish", but the kid does "appear" to have a violence problem (assuming the multiple battery charges are legit).
And I blame much of the racial problems there on those incharge for not being harsher on the "white kids". And it was totally wrong to file attempted murder charges even though it was within the DA's capacity to do so.
Here are some alarming test results from La Salle Parish just to show you how bad it really is there in Jena, La.. The number one problem in Jena is education and ignorance with racism being a byproduct of that yet no one is truely addressing it.
