George Bush cries-Sinfonian laughs

George Bush cried on the podium on stage with his son. The ever-sensitive left "bleeding hearts" couldn't contain themselves with joy at seeing a Bush cry:

I'd cry, too, if I were him.

Bush 41 broke down in tears while recalling Jeb!'s loss in the 1994 Florida gubernatorial race:

"But he didn't whine about it, and he didn't complain," Bush said before sobbing.

"One true measure of a man is how you handle victory and also defeat. So in '94 Floridians chose to rehire the governor, and they took note of his defeated opponent," he went on haltingly as Gov. Bush walked up to the podium, embraced his father and handed him a bottle of water.

"I can do it," President Bush insisted. "The moral of the story is to serve with honor, and your governor has served with honor. Thank you," he finished as the audience of current and former Bush aides and lawmakers gave him a standing ovation.
Naturally, this begs the question of whether 41 would give a similar valedictory to Dubya. My guess is, um, no.

I think what 41 really wanted to say yesterday is, "Jeb! is the smart one. He was supposed to be president, not my frat boy cheerleader son. I'm so ashamed."

Or something like that.

Anyway, congratulations to former president George H.W. Bush ... today's Blast Off! Daily Schadenfreude is for you!

I have no opinion on the matter. I will say, however that my father did not exactly live a pain-free life. He didn't cry at his parents' funerals; he didn't cry at any weddings; at his physical pain; he didn't even cry when Dave Henderson hit a home run off of Donnie Moore in 1986. In fact, in the 38 years I've known him, I've never seen him cry. That's all.

Hey, cool - thanks for the trackback!

And as far as "laughing" at GHWB crying for his son - please give me a break. First of all, I have plenty of sympathy for a father genuinely grieving for some aspect of his son's life that is worthy of such emotion. In my opinion, for a public figure like GHWB, the election loss of one son who went on to serve two terms as governor of the nation's fourth largest state is not unlike spilt milk, when compared with the tens of thousands of lives lost as a result of another son's delusional vendetta against a dictator who, it has been proven repeatedly (please don't insult my intelligence by demanding a link - we'll be here for a week if I linked everything), posed no threat to the United States in any way.

Once I see GHWB, or GWB, or let's just say anyone named Bush expressing any grief whatsoever over the disastrous impact of the current administration rather than troubling their beautiful minds over their own legacies (say, perhaps, shedding a tear over a flag-draped casket at Dover AFB), then I'll admit that I may have been a bit harsh in my assessment. Until then, though, all I'll say is thanks again for the attention.

Oh, and one last thing. If you want to say "Sinfonian couldn't contain himself ...," that's fine, but it's misleading and disingenuous to assign my schadenfreude, to which I openly admit, to all liberals of whatever stripe. Please don't generalize like that. It calls the rest of your opinions into question if you can't separate one individual's opinion from that of an entire half (or so) of the American ideological spectrum.

Hey Nelson,

It was clear to me that GWH Bush was also suffering from the stress of realizing that the debacles caused by his son are ultimately traced to the Bush family's aristocratic ambitions. In other words, the old man is as much to blame for Irag and other evils as the clueless son he foisted upon the world stage. Royalty, aristocracy, and plutocracy always were and always will be bad ideas and we have been forced to suffer through yet more proof of this.

Thank you for replying. However, amateur phychoanalysis is likely to be more a study of the analyzer than the analyzee.
