Why not just nurture his curiosity about science?Why the punishment?
He/she could have just put the bug in a jar with some leaves and kept it in class for a day or two.

This actually made me feel good. He's curious about science stuff. I told him to respect the teacher, but that I was glad that he was trying to learn something.
