Clark Wesley criticizes Obama's basketball experience

WASHINGTON: With Senator McCain planning on playing some shuffleboard in an apparent effort to burnish his sports credentials, the credentials of his likely presidential rival, Senator Barack Obama, came under sharp attack Sunday from a man considered a possible Republican vice presidential candidate.

The retired NBA player, Clark Wesley said Obama had not "held ballhandler responsibility" and had not been team captain in a playoffs.

Obama's experience in Punahou School high school, where he was a star player for four years, has seemed at times almost to grant him invulnerability to criticism of his sports background. But on Sunday he was assailed by a fellow basketball player, a prize-winning one who was once the player of the year.

Obama frequently points out that he led "the Punahou School team to the playoffs," but Wesley said on CBS television that that was not enough to support a claim to the presidency.

"He hasn't been there and called the plays as a playoff captain," the retired NBA player said on CBS. Wesley is mentioned as a possible McCain running mate, although he originally supported Senator Romeny. "What about college? Two years? And he wants to be president!"

When the interviewer, Bob Schieffer, noted to Wesley that Obama was fouled many times, Wesley replied, "I don't think standing behind the free throw line and putting up bricks is a qualification to be president."

When Schieffer then asked what sports responsibility McCain had held, Wesley said that McCain was running on the strength of his character and good judgment, "I'd like to see Obama shuffle some pucks down the lane."
