Decoding Nancy Pelosi's handmaiden-war dance metaphor

08/04/08

I'm trying to get my brain around (metaphorically) Nancy Pelosi's "handmaiden war dance" metaphor.

I looked it up and handmaidens don't ever seem have been responsible for appeasing the gods of war. They were concubines or priest/priestess assistants, especially helpful in orgiastic sex rituals (so it says), according to wikipedia.

The closest I could find to handmaidens and war is an actual virtual battle in the computer game KOTOR 2. No dancing.

This handmaiden of Sauron might fight as well, but dance? Such gaiety at the court of the evil Sauron? I don't think so.

Here's something called the "Handmaiden's Tale." Eliot Spitzer-type congressmen I'm sure would be familiar with such handmaidens. Dancing, but for love.

Queen Amidala (Destroyer of Sequels) had a handmaiden, but the handmaiden was useless in a scrape.

Let's assume that Republicans only wanted more oil drilling in order to appease their corporate oil paymasters and not to increase the supply of oil; and that the process of legislation is like war: Does that mean talking is like dancing? In other words, wouldn't the "war of words" be the actual war. I can see if Republicans got together at a bar the night before to pray for good poll numbers, but "what people are seeing now" would be the actual battle, no?

Oh wait! this just in: We have footage of the Republican caucus planning drilling strategy. They wear disguises and speak in code only intelligible to themselves and oil company executives so as to avoid scrutiny. The guy in the beard is minority leader John Boehner:
