Maria Luisa Giiel: No Tengo Edad

Antologia de la Musica Cubana: La Musica de los Anos, Vol. 6
I don't know anything about the singer other than that she's Cuban and was alive in the sixties. Most of you probably won't like No Tengo Edad (It says "No Tego Edad" on the CD), but I found it interesting in that it's a strait romantic song with little to distinguish it as Cuban and no discernible African influence.

From what I understand she won the Edith Piaf award in France sometime in the sixties, becoming the first non-French performer to do so. She had a considerable sucess in Spain a few decades ago, and was one of the favorites of Spanish songwriter Manuel Alejandro, but the years do pass.Cuban music doesn't have to be a question of African influence, unless of course you want to say-with good reason- that Spain has a lot of African influence in their music, the Moors weren't Korean, but what about this Dutch composer from the nineteenth-century who married President Menocal's daughter? Oh good Lord, I can't remeber his name! He was quite the character! It seems Prince Frederick of Bavaria gave him a ruby ring which he sold off, the proceeds going to the Cuban war of Independence. Love your blog.
Thanks for responding. I just meant that the song doesn't have to be Cuban. It could be Spanish or Mexican or from anywhere. I like it.
If you like "No Tengo Edad", you will also like the Italian version "Non ho l'età", sung by Gigliola Cinquetti. She won The Festival di Sanremo Music Competion in 1964 with this song
Thanks. I'll check it out.
