Dusty Springfield and Flo Sandons sing Anna- El Negro Zumbon
12/16/08
At the time, I didn't think my lovely trip to the oddly humorous shopping area centered on Pacific Blvd ("La Pacific") in Huntington Park, Ca. would leave me with such a nice feelings about it. It was an ordinary day. Perhaps because it was, and I was in relative peace, playing with my new Blackberry Storm, that I look back upon it so fondly. Perhaps it was this jewel of a song that keeps popping into my head.
I decided to ride in the back of the van. As I was sitting, I heard that song, "Anna, el Negro Zumbon." I immediately charged my little platoon with remembering the song.
Last time I trust them with so important a task! They proved to be of no use. I forgot the singer, but I retained the title, and it only took me a couple of hours, between Amazon and Rhapsody, to find it.
"Anna" was scrunched between some other very nice songs on a wonderful album called Hits of 1953.
"Anna" is a "Baion" which is a type of Brazilian Samba. It's supposed to be slow, but this one is fast.
It's the title tune of a movie from the same name. The singer, Flo Sandons, was Italian. I found this precious youtube video of the English Dusty Springfield, of all people, performing "Anna." I also found the original performance from the movie and a weirdly-staged version for my avant-garde readers. Enjoy:
First, the Sandons version:
The Youtube from the movie. The singer is Silvana Mangano. Magnificent!
Dusty, singing in Spanish with a "Cuban" accent:
This for my artistic fans, done in a Brazilian Sprockets style:
