Christmas music from Puerto Rico
12/20/08

You didn't think I'd forget my Boricua friends, did you? I love these Puerto Rican Christmas songs. Vamos.
For the podcast, I chose the greatest Puerto Rican singer of all time, Daniel Santos, with a little Bomba (or Plena- a little help?) gem, A los Santosreyes. "Los Santos Reyes" are the Three Kings.
The next one is the more country-sounding Aguinaldo De Navidad by Canario. I just learned that:
Aguinaldo is a folk genre of Christmas music, which originates from Puerto Rico and is based on an archaic form of Spanish Christmas carol. Aguinaldo music is often performed by what is called parrandas—a casual group of people, often family or friends, who go from house to house.
Follow up:
A Trulla is what Puerto Ricans call Christmas caroling (For more Boricua Christmas traditions, go here.) the singer is (Don't call me) Dommy Acevedo:
A combination Day Planner and "To Do" list, Para Todos Navidad by Chetto and Cheito Gonzalez is Franklin Covey's favorite Puerto Rican song:
Alergre Navidad, by perhaps the second best Puerto Rican singer, Bobby Capo:
And some holiday gloom from a normally upbeat demographic, El Mejor Regalo by Odilio Gonzalez:
Listen to Navidad sin Nadie by Gheito (That's what iTunes said) Gonzalez:
