A Gozar con mi Combo- in heaven Tribute to Cachao
05/23/08
OK. Cubanocast is back and ready to rumba.

Unfortunately, we must restart on a sad note. Cachao, bassist, band leader, composer, died March 22, 2008 (Here's an interview on the indispensable web site, Descarga.)
As one of the last remaining giants, he enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in the 90s with the help of Cuban actor Andy Garcia.
A Gozar con mi Combo by Cachao is, to my ears, the best Cuban instrumental song (descarga or "unloading") Different instruments take turns carrying the brilliant melody. I’ve never heard a more effective clarinet in Latin music and the guitar is an exciting addition to what is normally a horn and piano dominated genre. When the clarinet takes over after trading notes with the trumpet, in the bridge, only to be trumped in turn by the horn, it creates one of the most exciting moments in Cuban music.

Wonderful post on el Maestro. I think the Descarga interview is the best I’ve come across, and I heartily agree with your opinion of A Gozar con mi Combo, it’s a favorite of mine, one that I never get tired of listening to.
