Battlestar Galactica Crossroads part one
03/18/07
Crossroads turned out to be the best episode since the escape from New Caprica. The improvement stems not as much from what it had as much as from something Crossroads lacked-romance. Instead, the episode’s main focus was the trial of Gaius Baltar and the courtroom scenes where that plot line played out were excellent. The writer’s came up with enough surprises to avoid predictability without resorting to cheap shock value. The actual issues involved in Baltar’s case, like whether he had any other choice available to him, are complicated and worthy of exploration. Baltar’s situation on New Caprica kind of reminds me more of France in 1940 than Iraq in 2004.
I like the bridge created to future episodes with the introduction of Rosalyn’s hallucinations, the mysterious music, and the coming Cylon “storm.” The Adama vs. Adama conflict once again fails to create any worthwhile drama, but at least we were spared the other tormented relationships involving some of the other characters. .
