Matt Damon and Greengrass bash James Bond

07/28/07

I got this from Libertas, originally, but the original story is here. .

Proving his compatibility with the Film Actors Guild ethos:

"Bourne is this paranoid guy. He's on the run. He's not the government. The government is after him. He's a serial monogamist who's in love with his dead girlfriend and can't stop thinking about her," Damon said. "He's the opposite of James Bond."

Greengrass:

"He's an insider. He likes being a secret agent. He worships at the altar of technology. He loves his gadgets. And he embodies this whole set of misogynistic values," Greengrass said. "He likes violence. That's part of the appeal of the character. He has no guilt. He's essentially an imperial adventurer of a particularly English sort...

"Personally, I spit on those values. I think we've moved on a little bit from all that, the martini shaken, not stirred."

1. So, is Matt Damon condemning casual sex?
2. Is sleeping with a lot of women a sign of misogyny (I don't necessarily disagree that these are unsavory characteristics, I just wonder if he knows what he's saying)?
3. Liking violence is bad, I suppose, but what matters is how and against whom James Bond employs his martial gifts and wondrous technology. He's saved the world countless times and defeated many bad guys.
4. Or, is Damon saying that violence should just be used against one's own government?
5. "Imperial adventurer of a particularly English sort" that protects the world from that empire of the Soviet sort-the evil kind.
6. I wonder if Matt Damon is for government-run health care? You know, run by the same guys against whom Bourne fights- corrupt bureaucrats.
7. James Bond was married once.

I think the only problem with Damon has with Bond is that he thinks Bond fought on the wrong side. Had Bond battled George Bush, Ronald Reagan, the CIA, Halliburton, and the Green Berets instead of the Soviets and the guy with the cat, I'm sure Damon would have no problem with him. In fact, I think Damon would have hailed him as a hero.

Damon, Matt Damon.

Hey just so you know, the second and third parts of the statement you posted was actually said by Greengrass, not Damon.

You and the guys over at Libertas are all the same. You use Hollywood as some sort of vehicle to vent your frustrations toward individuals with a Liberal view. It's horribly pathetic, completely played out and you guys always come back to the same old stock set of generalizations. Seriously, how do you go on like this?

Take a damn breather. Quit worrying about what Matt Damon said... it's not important. Seriously, who REALLY cares what Matt Damon said? He's Matt Damon! WHO CARES?!

Honestly, you guys are really missing the point here. You do realize your time on this planet is limited, right?

Some people care, obviously, or else people wouldn't interview him. It's not that I care what he says, it's that I'm telling people why they shouldn't care what he thinks.

But, I understand what you mean, though. Some people go overboard. I don't do it too much myself, I think.

Yeah man, my apologies for coming off so harsh. I had just finished reading some politically fueled reviews at Libertas, heard about the Damon comments, did a search, came here and saw your source. So... I think I had a hateful fire burning. I don't even know why I read the reviews at Libertas. I guess it's somewhat masochistic.

I understand what you're doing though. People should not care at all what ANY actor has to say about their work, expecially if they have some political or moral message they wish to impart upon the public. That's just a little too self righteous. They should zip it up and let their work speak for itself, if it has anything to say at all. Trying to shove the message down peoples throats makes them just as guilty as the people they're trying to speak out against.
