Vista Task Manager discovery
07/03/07
If you have Vista, I know you hate the fact that pressing Control-Alt-Delete takes you away from Windows and forces you to pick the task manager (I have to summon the task manager more often than I did under Windows XP)-the thing you want 99% of the time. Well, I found out the keyboard command to take you strait there. You have to press Control-Shift-Escape. Remember that; you'll probably need to do it often.

This is old news to anyone using a Windows XP machine joined to a domain. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up the security dialog and forces you to pick the task manager. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc to go directly to the Task Manager however has worked for years.

It bugged me until I read about it. I thought I might allow others to avoid the frustration.

Glad Monte knew this.
Thank you so much for this tip!!! I hated going thru the Ctrl+Alt+Del, and then having to select task manager.

It's been this way for a very long time (I think that this was SOP in Windows 2000, and perhaps even Windows NT)

Or you could right-click the tasbar and select Task Manager.
One of the few cases where Microsoft has provided many ways to skin a cat. Mind you, there aren't many things one needs in Windows more often than the Task Manager. ;)

I don't remember that in 2000, which I had for a while after my "experience" with Windows Me.

But... HOW can you access task manager in Vista WITHOUT obscure key combinations. Where is it located? Can I access it through start > programs > etc? Or can I open a folder and explore the C-drive and find it and double-click activate it?
Why I ask? When you work remote desktop, you sometimes need to forcefully terminate a program that's seized up. But the key combinations in such a situation generate the task manager on the client you sit behind and NOT on the remote :-(
Hope someone knows the answer.
Thanks and greetings,
Hans
