CD Toolbox Recovery Free is something that I hope you'll never need but unfortunately will. With the proliferation of digital cameras, scanners, mp3 players, and digital camcorders, it's almost certain that you have valuable information- and irreplaceable memories, in the case of pictures and video- stored digitally in your home. I'm equally sure that some of those precious zeros and ones are on CD or DVD. Imagine the frustration of having 800 sentimentally treasured Kb invisible to your computer because of a damaged disk.

Such was the case with a disk I used to store some of my Iraq deployment pics. After cleaning the DVD multiple times, the computer would just give me a "Cyclic Redundancy Check" error. My choices were either to fix the disk or volunteer for another tour, and since my uniforms didn't fit me anymore, I scoured the internet for a way to heal my disk. I came up with CD Toolbox Recovery Free. It's a free software program that reads damaged disks and extracts information. Does it work? It does, in most cases.

I placed the damaged disk in the computer and ran the free program. You can choose which files to recover. I just chose the one and, after a while, was thrilled that it was able to recover it. When I opened the file, however, the information was corrupt; only part of the photo was visible. This, however, was a big improvement from not being able to be read at all. I eventually found a way to get the file (next post), but I still recommend this program. It's free and simple to use. No doubt, it will save something in the future.
