Sorry for the un-Asymmetric language, but it's the mildest word I used this morning when I found out that Bluehost suspended my account without even so much as a warning, that still conveys my full feelings.
I get up and check Sitemeter. 64 hits.
"Hmmm, that doesn't sound right. Maybe the server is down."
I go to my site. It says that the account has been suspended. I call. They tell me that the owner of the company told them to take it down because it's shared hosting and I was using too many resources (thank you, faithful readers).
OK, fine.
The thing that chaps my hide is that they didn't warn me once. No email. No call. Nothing. If I didn't check, I could have been days without service or I could have lost everything I worked on for over two years- literally hundreds of hours of work. Do you know how long it takes to find the perfect cat flushing video on youtube?
Forget the guy from AIG, let's string up the Bluehost CEO.
I didn't have time to prepare an alternative, and they didn't offer me one.
And why didn't they?
Because they don't have one. Bluehost is all shared service. You can be on a box with less people, but that wouldn't really solve the problem.
So, I went on my blog software site, B2evolution, and saw which hosting service they recommend. Pressed for time, and thus not being able to check each one individually, I just called the highest rated one, which happened to be Inmotion Hosting. In motion has a service called "virtual private server" (VPS) which is like having a dedicated server so that I can have higher volume (please tell your friends and let's try to crash this one too), but at about half the price. Inmotion was nice on the phone. I uploaded my files and database, ran the install script for my blog. and everything seems to be working fine. I'll let you know in a couple of months how they're doing. I hope they don't stab me in the back like Bluehost.
